Mathematics and Numeracy

Puzzle of the week

The Maths Department will now be running a 'Puzzle of the Month' competition. Please submit your entry to the box in Miss Mackie's room, or hand in to your maths teacher. Entry must include your name, class and worked solution. A winner will be drawn from the correct solutions and a prize will be delivered! These are meant to take a little time and brain power, so please feel free to take a photo or write down to be worked out later.

Staff

The Mathematics department has five full time experienced members of staff.  The Head of Department is Mrs Foley. Ms Mackie, Mr McLachlan, Mrs Vallance and Mr Wain make up the rest of the team.

Each teaching room is well equipped and has an interactive smart board.  We offer a wide array of courses at National level and through the Broad General Education phase.

BGE

In S1 and S2, pupils have 4 maths lessons per week, covering experiences and outcomes in Numeracy and Mathematics. There are 4 blocks during the academic year. Each covers a range of topics at a level appropriate to the class.

In S3, all pupils continue with 4 maths lessons per week, and we start to prepare for the National 4 and National 5 courses that they will follow in S4.

Senior Phase

In S4, pupils follow the National 5 Mathematics course and / or National 5 Applications of Mathematics (guide on Apps and Maths courses). The National 4 Mathematics courses are also on offer to pupils who are better suited to trying for National 5 in S5 or S6.

In S5 & S6, pupils can choose to continue their studies in Mathematics at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.  They can also choose to follow the (new) Higher Applications of Mathematics course:

National 5 Apps Overview

Continuous formative and summative assessments are used to track and monitor pupil progress throughout all years.

Homework

Regular homework plays a vital role in the development and consolidation of mathematical knowledge and skills.  Homework is set on Microsoft Teams, with printed worksheets or finishing off classwork. There is also homework club on a Wednesday in the Library after school.

Extra Curricular

We actively encourage participation in national Maths competitions. We also work closely with the other departments to support learning and the development of numeracy skills in context. The department offers study support a few times in the week to all pupils.
